![]() The Wicked Witch's entrance also served to nudge Regina towards the light side. Gratifying as it is to watch characters such as Regina and Hook become better people, it's also a blast to watch someone who is wicked and owns it. ![]() ![]() The second part where she was spurned by Glenda and the other witches of Oz made her anger and hatred more believable – enough to sell it. As far as her backstory, the initial tale about her being jealous of Regina wasn't quite enough. She was written to be over the top, and that sometimes went too far. Rebecca Mader embraced the role of the Wicked Witch and turned in mostly deliciously evil, fun to watch scenes. Jennifer Morrison and Lana Parrilla as Emma and Regina The leap forward in time gave Henry time to grow up, and it was nice to see the character and the actor mature. All of the actors were in wonderful form, and Jared Gilmore especially jumped out at me. When Once returned with its mid-season premiere, it felt fresh and exciting. Taking care of Peter Pan took so long that I would have welcomed just about any change, but as it turns out, the entrance of the Wicked Witch spiced up the show. The way Pan's story ended also gave Rumple a heroic moment which is interesting because of his behavior later in the season. In hindsight, he only hit one note and stuck with it throughout his time on the series, but since Peter Pan is an entity that doesn't change over the years, he can get away with it. Setting up Rumplestiltskin's father as the boy who didn't want to grow up and turning him into a villain was creative, and Robbie Kay did a solid job in the role. By far, the most intriguing part of the Neverland plot was the twist on Peter Pan's origin story. She and others could always become series regulars though. So, even if it's delightful to meet characters like Ariel, it can be a bummer because we barely get to see her again. They all need screen time, and while the writers do a deft job of pairing people up in order to keep more of them in the spotlight, it just doesn't leave space for a ton of ancillary characters. She only showed up a couple more times over the season, and that's the tricky part of a show with a larger ensemble cast. Colin O'Donoghue as Captain HookĪriel made her first appearance during the Neverland episodes, and JoAnna Garcia was a perfect real-life embodiment of the animated character from The Little Mermaid. She never lost her wit or sarcasm, and she'll never be shiny and pure in the same way Snow White is – and that's how it should be. Fighting alongside Emma, Charming, and Snow on the island to get Henry back was key to pushing her in the right direction. Regina spent Seasons 1 and 2 flip-flopping between evil and good, but she settled into the path of redemption in Season 3. She was the standout character of the season because of both her arc and Lana Parrilla's performance. Colin O'Donoghue got more to do this season, and he delivered across the board. He assisted Charming with no real ulterior motives and was honest with Emma about Neal. We learned that Hook's interactions with Emma were more than innocent flirtations, and we saw him continue to change. However, the time spent hunting Peter Pan gave them a chance to develop and to grow together. Watching the Storybrooke heroes tramp around the jungle got boring. That said, the Neverland arc dragged on far too long.
